Many air fresheners emit toxic chemicals according to the Environmental Impact Review. Scented sprays, gels and plug-in air fresheners offer no public health benefits yet contain harmful chemicals linked to breathing difficulties, developmental problems in babies and cancer, according to the petition sent to the two federal agencies by heavy weight environmental groups including Natural Resources Defense Council, Sierra Club, Alliance for Healthy Homes and the National Center for Healthy Housing. Health effects from indoor air pollutants emitted by air fresheners may be experienced soon after exposure to these odors or, possibly, years later.
